Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Wednesday unanimously backed the President's reference to the proposal to officially change the State's name from Kerala to "Keralam".

The Assembly unanimously passed all 10 clauses of the Draft Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2024. The Bill aims to change the state’s name to Keralam in all official communications and proceedings.

The Bill was sent to the legislature by President Droupadi Murmu on June 17 to gather the views of Kerala’s lawmakers, marking the first time the Assembly has received a Presidential reference. Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan read each clause aloud, and the House approved them all with a voice vote.

The Speaker announced that the Assembly’s decision would be shared with the President and the Central Government, praising the Centre for its swift action on the matter. The Keralam Bill will now be formally presented in Parliament and published in the official gazette, after which Kerala will officially become Keralam.
