Kerala Lets Buses Display Ads as Free Travel Scheme Hits Revenue

Following a meeting with private bus owners, Transport Minister C.P. John announced that the government would also frame a comprehensive transport policy

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has constituted a special committee to examine the challenges faced by the private bus sector following the rollout of the Priyadarshini free travel scheme. Retired IPS officer K. Padmakumar will head the panel.

Following a meeting with private bus owners, Transport Minister C.P. John announced that the government would also frame a comprehensive transport policy. As part of measures to support the sector, private bus operators will be allowed to display advertisements both inside and outside their vehicles.

Private bus owners, however, urged the government to act without delay, warning that many operators could be forced to take their buses off the road before the committee submits its recommendations.

The operators said they have, for the time being, decided against suspending bus services in protest. However, they will convene a joint meeting in the coming days to determine their next course of action based on the government's response.
