Heavy Rains Continue To Lash Kerala

Red alert issued for 11 districts, water levels in many rivers - Meteorological Department

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains hit various parts of Kerala on Tuesday, prompting the Meteorological Department to declare a red alert in 11 districts.

The department predicted extremely heavy rainfall in Kasargod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. Orange alert has been sounded for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha.

The heavy rainfall has led to widespread destruction in many parts of the state. Train services on the Thrissur - Guruvayur route were disrupted for about two hours after a tree was uprooted and fell on the electric lines above the railway track.

On Tuesday morning, heavy rainfall was recorded in Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur districts, with Vellanikara reporting the highest rainfall at 114.7mm, followed by Kozhikode at 113.4 mm and Kannur at 113.2 mm. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across Keal, with significant rainfall expected from May 28 to June 1.

Additionally, squally weather with wind speeds up to 60 km per hour is likely in many places along the Kerala coast.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued flood alerts for many rivers, as persistent rainfall continues to raise water levels. Several rivers recorded increased water levels due to heavy rain, prompting the IMD to declare an orange alert for rivers in Kottayam, Kozhikode and Pathanamthitta districts.

Authorities have advised people living near the banks of the Meenachil, Korappuzha, Achenkovil and Manimala rivers to remain vigilant given the rising water levels.
