Heavy Rain Lashes Kerala, Red Alert Issued for Five Districts

Residents, particularly those in districts under red and orange alerts, are advised to follow official weather updates and heed instructions issued by local authorities

Heavy rain and strong winds have disrupted normal life across Kerala, with all districts experiencing adverse weather conditions. Heavy downpours that began on Saturday night have continued, inundating low-lying areas and causing widespread waterlogging.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for five districts in Kerala on October 25 and 26, warning of extremely heavy rainfall as weather systems over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are expected to influence conditions across the state.

Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad are under a red alert on October 25, while Idukki and Palakkad have been placed under a red alert for October 26. Isolated locations in these districts could receive rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

The weather department has also issued orange and yellow alerts for several other districts, indicating the possibility of widespread heavy rainfall over the coming days.

On October 25, an orange alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kannur. On October 26, the alert will remain in force in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram.

Rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours is likely at isolated places in districts under the orange alert.

A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Kasaragod on October 25. On October 26, it will cover Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area over the southeastern Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep region is contributing to the prevailing weather conditions. A trough associated with the cyclonic circulation extends across Kerala towards the coast of northern Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, another well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining southeastern Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further.

Residents, particularly those in districts under red and orange alerts, are advised to follow official weather updates and heed instructions issued by local authorities.
