Experience Kashmir’s Freezing Cold in Munnar
Temperatures drop as tourists flock famous hill station for New Year season

Thiruvananthapuram: With temperatures dipping sharply in Munnar, tourists are flocking to the famous hill station to celebrate the Christmas-New Year season.
Chenduvarai, a picturesque estate, lived up to expectations again this year with temperatures dropping below -1°C on Saturday. Known for its sprawling tea plantations, lush greenery, and factories, it often records zero degrees during winter. The Munnar–Chenduvarai bus route offers a glimpse of the area’s stunning beauty, passing popular spots like Photo Point, Mattupetty Dam, Kundala Dam, and Chenduvarai estate.
Visitors can hop on a local bus to soak in the breathtaking views along the way.
Letchmi, another popular tourist spot, recorded 2°C. This sprawling tea estate attracts visitors with off-road jeep trips, treks, and beautifully designed tea plantations.
The rock formations in Letchmi offer an amazing view.
Meteorological experts say the winter season set in early this year, with temperatures dropping to subzero and below 3 degrees. Many parts of Munnar are covered in a thick carpet of frost, especially in the mornings.
With just four days left until New Year’s Eve, tourists have already started heading up to the hill station. The surge in visitors has caused traffic congestion lasting for hours along the route, and the number of tourists is expected to rise significantly in the coming days.
Besides Munnar, large numbers of tourists are also visiting the Devikulam area to enjoy the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Thoovanam Falls.
Sevenmallay, which recorded -1°C a week ago, is another tourist hotspot. Known for its peaceful ambience, it’s a favorite among birdwatching enthusiasts and trekkers.
