BJP Member Gets Elected With Muslim League's Vote In Kerala Panchayat

The alliance resulted in the defeat of a CPM nominee

Thiruvananthapuram: A BJP candidate tied up with an Indian Union Muslim League member to get elected to a post in the Pavilike gram panchayat in Kasargod district of Kerala. The alliance between two ideologically opposed parties led to the BJP’s Sumana G. Bhat securing the health standing committee chairperson’s post with the support of IUML’s Maimunathal Misiriya.

The alliance resulted in the defeat of a CPM nominee. In Tuesday’s election, in which all five members cast their votes, Bhat secured three votes, and the CPM’s Dineshwari Nages two. The decisive vote came from IUML's Kadenkodi ward member Maimunathal Misiriya/

Political observers say the UDF is engaging in a tacit understanding with the BJP to keep the CPM out of power positions in the panchayats. They recall similar cooperation during the election of standing committees, when four UDF members voted for a BJP candidate.

The Muslim League, the second-largest alliance partner in the UDF, voting for the BJP has become a hot topic of discussion in the district. With the state going to the polls in a couple of months, the CPM is planning to campaign against what it calls the unholy nexus between the UDF and BJP in the local bodies.
