Abdul Malik’s Unique Story of Unwavering Dedication

Abdul Malik, a teacher by profession, swam across a river for over 22 years to reach his school

Abdul Malik, a mathematics teacher from Padinjattumuri, Malappuram district in Kerala, has swum across Kerala's Kadalundi river for over 22 years from his home to the school.

He used to swim along the river to avoid long road journey, which would involve changing three buses.

“It saved a lot of my time”, he said.

He carried his books and clothes in a plastic bag and once he crossed the river he changed to fresh clothes. He used to swim approximately one kilometer along the river every day. Although he encountered multiple challenges like strong currents and monsoon rains, Malik never missed a day of work in over 22 years.

Malik is passionate about environmental conservation. He is concerned about how the river has been polluted over the past years.
“The river was clean and crystal clear, but now it is polluted”, he said. He organized regular clean up drives along with his students to remove the plastic, garbage and other pollutants from the riverss surface. Malik also teaches swimming to his students, helping them overcome their fear of water and equipping them with a basic life skill.
