THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bizarre incident, an 85-year-old accused in a POCSO case was allegedly beaten up in the Alappuzha district jail by another inmate, who claimed he acted out of outrage as a father of two girls.
A senior jail official said the incident occurred during the night between December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, just hours after both undertrials were brought to the jail. Initially, the attacker, who faced multiple theft and assault charges, was unaware of the offence that had landed the elderly man in jail. The two had been sharing the same room.
He later discovered that the elderly man was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl and was facing charges under the POCSO Act. Upon learning about his crime, he attacked the elderly prisoner, causing facial injuries and damage to his teeth.
Jail officials confirmed the incident after reviewing CCTV footage from inside the prison, and a complaint was filed with the police regarding the assault. In his statement to the police, the 39-year-old attacker, a father of two daughters, said that when he learned the 85-year-old had assaulted a minor, he lost his temper and attacked in a fit of anger. The police have booked him under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
