Woman Commuter Penalised For Eating While Travelling on Metro In Bengaluru

BENGALURU: The officials concerned of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Monday imposed a fine of Rs 500 on a woman commuter after she was eating while travelling, amounting to violation of metro rules a couple of days back. The consumption of food and beverages within metro premises and on trains is strictly prohibited as per Bangalore Metro regulations.

The woman, a regular commuter on Metro Rail from Madavara Metro Station to Magadi Road Metro Station was caught on camera eating while travelling on metro rail on April 26, a violation of metro rules.

The woman eating while travelling was caught on camera by a fellow passenger and uploaded the video clip on social media. Taking note of the violation and after identification, vigilant security staff of metro rail intercepted the woman as soon as the woman commuter entered Madavara Metro Station at NICE road junction on Monday morning.

A release from BMRCL stated the policy to bar eating while travelling and within metro premises is to prevent littering, safeguard hygiene and help maintain a pleasant atmosphere for everyone commuting.

A couple of days back, BMRCL stated to strengthen its patrolling efforts during non-peak hours to address public grievances about passengers using chewable tobacco-based products and to avoid subsequent spitting and littering with metro premises.

BMRCL has decided to implement random physical pat-down checks at metro stations while platform security guards will be sensitized to look out for such passengers. The central security surveillance room has already been instructed to monitor passenger behavior and alert the concerned platform security staff immediately upon noticing any violations.

In addition, BMRCL will launch extensive awareness campaigns to educate passengers on the importance of refraining from using chewable tobacco-based products within metro premises.
