Vijayapura: Police Crack 'Gun Attack' Mystery- Complainant, Two Others Arrested

MANGALURU: Two weeks after a farmer reported that he had been shot by masked assailants near Toravi, police arrested him and two others alleging that the attack was orchestrated to falsely implicate six persons with whom they had disputes.
The complainant, Dayavant Dere, from Ittangihal Doddi village, had alleged that while he was in his agricultural field in Toravi at about 3 pm on June 3, two unidentified persons with their faces covered approached him on foot and opened fire from behind, causing an injury to his right arm. He named six persons as being responsible for the incident.

Vijayapura SP Laxman Nimbargi said that the police based on suspicion took two persons — Anand alias Anil Dere and Kondiba Manavar, residents of Ittangihal Doddi, into custody on June 18 and questioned them. They reportedly confessed that the incident had been staged.
According to the police investigation, complainant Dere and the two accused had disputes and personal enmity with those named in the original FIR. Police said the three allegedly conspired to create a false incident with the intention of implicating their rivals in a criminal case.
Investigators found that on June 3, the three had allegedly assembled at a field belonging to Anand at Jalageri village, where Anand allegedly fired a shot from a country-made pistol at Dayavant's right arm, causing a non-fatal injury.
Later, Dayavant created a false crime scene and lodged a complaint claiming that the persons named in the FIR had shot him.
Following these findings, the complainant Dere, along with Anand and Manavar, was arrested. The country-made pistol allegedly used in the incident has been seized. All three accused have been remanded to judicial custody.
