Udupi: Woman Held For Cheating Two Of Rs 1.45 crore In PMEGP Loan Promise

Udupi: A woman who allegedly cheated two people of Rs 1.45 crore on the pretext of arranging subsidy loans under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) has been arrested by the Brahmavar police.
According to police, the complainant, Sarita Lewis (39), a resident of Heradi, of Yadtadi village in Udupi district, stated that in November 2023, she came to know the accused Kaushalya through Anjalin D’Silva. Koushalya claimed she could help secure a PMEGP subsidy loan. Although Sarita initially refused, she was persuaded by Kaushalya’s assurances, the FIR stated.
Later, Koushalya allegedly demanded money for various “processing” and “clearance” reasons related to the loan. Believing her, Sarita transferred money in several installments to 14 accounts, including those of Koushalya, her husband Sandesh, and other persons named by her — Prakash, Ashish Shetty, Rajendra Byndoor, Geetha, Harini, Navya, Kumar, Malathi, Praveen, Hariprasad, Nagaraj, and Bharathi Singh. In total, Sarita paid Rs 80.72 lakh.
The accused also assured Anjalin D’Silva, Sarita’s relative, that she too would receive a subsidy loan under PMEGP. For this Kaushalya took another Rs 65 lakh. It stated that the accused convinced both victims that she could secure a total subsidy loan of Rs 4 crore. In all, she took Rs 1.45 crore and failed to deliver on her promise.
Following a complaint, the Brahmavar Police registered a case under Sections 318(2), 318(4), and 319 read with 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The police have arrested Kaushalya into custody and further investigation is in progress.
