Udupi Police To Install 601 CCTV Cameras

Police plannng to expand ‘Drishti’ night patrol to 21more locations

Mangaluru: In a major push to enhance public safety, the Udupi district police, in collaboration with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, have launched a project to install 601 CCTV cameras across 207 junctions in Udupi district at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore.

Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that the initiative will cover key border areas, communally sensitive locations, and high-traffic zones.

Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras will be installed at locations like Mala, Hosmar, Sacheripete, Sanur, Someshwar, Amasebail, Hosangadi, Dali, Meel Gangolli, Malpe Beach, and the Udupi city bus stand.

Additionally, high-definition cameras will be set up at Kalsanka, Karavali Junction, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte, the service bus stand, the old KSRTC bus stand, M Kodi junction, Kandluru Pete, Baradi, and Naravi. All camera feeds will be continuously monitored from the respective police stations and the district control room.

Meanwhile, in a bid to curb crime and enhance public safety, the Udupi district police are set to expand their ‘Drishti’ night patrolling program from the current 12 locations to 21 more across the district in the coming days.

The initiative, which operates from 10 pm to 6 a.m., deploys trained security guards in towns, market areas, and other vulnerable zones to deter theft, crimes against women, and drug-related offences, while safeguarding commercial establishments, isolated homes, and senior citizens. Guards are tasked with alerting the beat police or the district control room if they detect any suspicious activity.
