BENGALURU: Two employees of a bar were charred to death at their workplace in Mysuru city on Monday while 6 others sustained burn injuries when a fire sparked reportedly by a short circuit. The fire incident is said to have occurred at around 3.07 pm at Fox Den Restaurant and Bar on Dattagalli of Mysuru city.
The deceased have been identified as Sahil and Prakash. Both were in the kitchen when a fire ravaged the bar and destroyed the belongings there. Injured persons have been identified as Sonu, Ramesh, Mahadev Prasad, Prajwal, Avinash and pub owner Preetham Pumeeth.
One of the fire and emergency services personnel engaged in firefighting attributed the fire to the terrace (roof top) covered with dry straws and 15 persons including some customers at the bar were rescued. The charred bodies were retrieved and handed over to the police.
An eye witness accounts stated he escaped with second layer burn injuries to his left hand while primary burn to his left ear when the pub caught fire. The eye witness was at the pub with his wife for lunch. The eye witness said “My wife came across the fire and was alerted to leave the pub and before it could escape from the spit fire spread rapidly and ravaged the pub in minutes.”
“I was having lunch when the fire was noticed but unaware of the cause of the fire. The fire was noticed in the table next to my table and fire spread rapidly and customers had a few seconds to escape from the raging flames,” said the eye witness who visited the pub for the maiden time. Until the fire broke, the eye witness said, “The theme and ambience was liked by them.”
When fire broke out, eyewitnesses stated, there were about 35 customers and many initially did not recognize the magnitude of the fire at the pub before they realized and managed to escape in the nick of time. Fire and emergency services personnel swung into action to douse the fire at the pub.
Sources said the pub was narrow and the pub operators had laid stress in decoration to create an ambience to attract customers. In order to create ambience at the bar, sources said the operators had placed dry straw to cover the top and it quickly caught fire and spread to the vicinity in no time. Police have registered a case and investigations are on.
