Bidar: A weather study scientific instrument launched by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Hyderabad, landed in Jalasangi village of Humnabad Taluk, about 45 km from the district headquarters Bidar, with the aid of a balloon, sparking curiosity and raising concern among villagers on Saturday morning.
The sight of the balloon landing near a house sparked curiosity among the residents, who gathered in large numbers to get a closer look. Along with the balloon, a large machine with a blinking light was also found.
A letter in Kannada accompanying the instrument provided guidelines for ensuring the safety and recovery of the equipment. The letter identified the equipment as belonging to the TIFR Balloon Facility under the Department of Atomic Energy and urged residents to follow specific instructions to maintain the instrument's integrity.
The instructions included avoiding any tampering with the equipment, preserving all items in their current state, and refraining from moving it from its landing location. It also stated to immediately notify the nearest police station and contact TIFR officials through the provided phone numbers or email addresses.
The letter further stated that those who comply with the guidelines and assist in safeguarding the equipment until it is retrieved by TIFR officials would receive a reward of Rs 3,000.
Such instruments have been seen landing in other parts of Karnataka as well. On August 2, 2024, a similar scientific instrument landed in Chadachan taluk of Vijayapura district, causing a similar reaction from locals.
Humnabad police visited the site, and officials from TIFR later arrived to retrieve the instrument. Sources told Deccan Chronicle that the reward was handed over to the person who informed the authorities.
