Karnataka: Techies Plan Highest Ever Tricolour Hoisting Near Space On Republic Day

BENGALURU: A group of techies from Karnataka are planning to do highest ever flag hoisting using high altitude hydrogen balloon to touch the space on 77th Republic Day on Monday and the confident techies team aim to get tricolor unfurl through use of hydrogen balloon when it reaches a height of 80,000 feet but will continue to travel up to a distance of about 1 lakh feet to touch stratosphere closer to the space.
“At 80,000 feet the hydrogen balloon holding a tricolor will automatically unfurl,” claim a techie engaged in building the mechanism the post stated in a post on a social media platform over getting permission from officials concerned of Directorate General of Civil Aviation, New Delhi and also from Airport Authority of India.
Having an idea to launch the highest ever recorded national flag hoisting, the techies started to discuss how to give their idea a shape to take tricolour to the highest altitude possible.
The techies at first considered using a drone to hoist the national flag but the drone had a lacuna that it could fly to only about 1,000 feet in height and later they thought of using an airspace which could fly to a height of about 15-km in height.
Use of motor was also discussed but techies ruled out motors since motors won’t work at high altitudes with temperature reaching -60 degree celsius. The team of techies used Nichrome wire that heats up to cut a rope and furl the national flag.
An idea struck the techies to use a high altitude hydrogen balloon to make their dream come true and started building a mechanism. They built the electronics for tracking the location and the altitude covered. When the balloon reaches a height of about 80,000 feet, the flag will unfurl automatically while the balloon will continue to fly to reach a height of 1 lakh feet holding the flag.
The balloon will burst after covering 1 lakh feet, techies said the payload will come down safely using a parachute. The safe coming down of the payload will be captured with the help of cameras mounted outside the payload box.
