Siddaramaiah’s Push, AHINDA Consolidation Aid Congress In Bagalkot

The contest was initially seen as a close one between the Congress and the BJP, with expectations of a narrow result: Report

BAGALKOT: A combination of welfare schemes, focused campaigning by the leadership led by CM Siddaramiah, consolidation of AHINDA votes and sympathy factor are said to have helped the Congress secure a convincing victory in the Bagalkot by poll.

Congress candidate Umesh Meti, a first-time contestant, and son of former MLA HY Meti, not only retained the seat for the party but won by a margin of 22,332 votes, defeating BJP’s Veeranna Charantimath, a seasoned leader.

The contest was initially seen as a close one between the Congress and the BJP, with expectations of a narrow result. However, the Congress managed to pull off a comfortable win, widening the margin significantly as counting progressed.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is understood to have taken personal interest in the constituency, given his long association with the late HY Meti. Both leaders had earlier been part of the Janata Dal (Secular) before moving to the Congress.

Siddaramaiah also played a key role in resolving internal differences within the Meti family over the ticket and ensured unity ahead of the election. He campaigned in the constituency for several days.
The AHINDA (minorities, backward classes, and Dalits) factor is also believed to have worked in favour of the Congress.

HY Meti had been seen as a key AHINDA leader, and efforts were made to consolidate this support base behind Umesh Meti. Minister Satish Jarkiholi was among those who played a role in mobilising this segment during the campaign.

Party leaders also pointed to the impact of the government’s guarantee schemes, which they said resonated with voters across both rural and urban areas. The sympathy factor too is said to have played its role.

While the BJP made efforts to regain the seat, the party fell short despite fielding an experienced candidate. While BJP used to get good support in Urban areas, this time that did not happen.

Though the Lingayat community is numerically significant in the constituency, the Congress which fielded Meti, from Kuruba community, appears to have managed a broader coalition of support.
Speaking after his victory, Umesh Meti thanked the voters and party workers. “I bow in gratitude to all the voters of Bagalkot, both in urban and rural areas.

This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to all Congress workers and reflects the support for the government’s initiatives,” he said.

Dedicating the win to the people, he added, “The people have once again shown their affection for my father. I thank all party workers for their support.”

He also acknowledged the role of party leaders in the campaign. “From the filing of nomination to the end of campaigning, the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, district in-charge minister RB Timmapur, Minister Satish Jarkiholi, and all leaders and workers worked tirelessly. This victory is the result of their collective effort,” he said.

BJP candidate Veeranna Charantimath, meanwhile, thanked party workers and voters for their support. Calling victory and defeat a natural part of politics, he said the party would take the result in its stride.
“We will accept this as a challenge and work with renewed energy to strengthen the organisation in the coming days,” he said.
