Siddaramaiah Slams Defamatory Post on PM Modi

Speaking to reporters near Kudalasangama, Siddaramaiah expressed unhappiness over such things posted on social media

Bagalkot: Reacting to the controversy over a Congress tweet showing a headless image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said no one—Modi or anyone else—should be defamed on social media.

“There is freedom of speech and expression, but that doesn’t mean one has the right to defame others,” he said.

Speaking to reporters near Kudalasangama, Siddaramaiah expressed unhappiness over such things posted on social media.

On national security, he said India must not hesitate to go to war with Pakistan if the situation demands it, but stressed that terrorism must first be uprooted. “We are not opposed to war if it becomes inevitable. But the central government must ensure the safety of every citizen. This is what I said earlier too—I did not mean there should not be war,” he clarified.

Recalling the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Siddaramaiah said former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had dealt a decisive blow to Pakistan, leading to the surrender of nearly 80,000 soldiers.

On the Central government proposing caste survey in the next census, he reiterated the Congress party’s commitment to a socio-economic and caste survey.

“Our party manifesto supports socio-economic and caste census. It is unclear if the Centre will conduct just a caste census or also have a socio-economic survey. Socio- economic survey is very important for social justice," he said.

Asked about the Centre’s directive for Pakistani nationals to return, Siddaramaiah said Karnataka supports the Centre’s decisions.
