New Delhi: Outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday met Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath, the residence of Sonia Gandhi, a day after tendering his resignation following directions from the party high command.
Siddaramaiah, accompanied by Randeep Surjewala, held discussions on key political and organisational issues, including cabinet reshuffle, Rajya Sabha elections and party matters in Karnataka. He later met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Meanwhile, speculation over the next leadership intensified, with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar emerging as the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post.
Political buzz also surrounded senior leader Satish Jarkiholi, amid indications he could be considered for a key role, including Deputy CM or Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president. Supporters in Belagavi offered prayers for his elevation.
In a parallel development, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation, dissolving the Council of Ministers with immediate effect. However, Siddaramaiah will continue as Chief Minister until alternative arrangements are made.
Earlier, Siddaramaiah expressed gratitude to the Congress leadership and the people of Karnataka, reaffirming his commitment to constitutional values and noting that the party continues to hold a clear majority in the Assembly.
