Poor Monsoon: Karnataka Reserves Almatti Water For Drinking

The statement said most reservoirs are yet to receive adequate inflows because of the weak monsoon, raising concerns over water availability in the coming months.

Vijayapura: Karnataka government has directed that the water available in the Almatti reservoir be reserved exclusively for drinking purposes as poor monsoon rainfall has delayed inflows into reservoirs across the state.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Superintending Engineer of the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited (KBJNL), Almatti Dam Circle, said the decision has been taken due to inadequate monsoon rainfall and the resulting decline in reservoir levels.

He appealed to farmers to cooperate with the directive, saying the available water must be conserved to meet the drinking water needs of people and livestock.

The statement said most reservoirs are yet to receive adequate inflows because of the weak monsoon, raising concerns over water availability in the coming months. If the rainfall deficit persists, the state could face a severe shortage of drinking water for people and cattle.

Citing the National Water Policy and the State Water Policy, the government said drinking water has the highest priority and the water stored in the Almatti reservoir will be reserved for that purpose until inflows improve.

Tungabhadra dam authorities had also issued a similar advisory a few days ago.
