YADGIR: Nine people lost their lives in a head-on collision between a private bus and a car on National Highway 151A near Shantapur Cross in Shorapur taluk of Yadgir district on Thursday. The impact of the collision was so severe that both vehicles caught fire.
The victims, all from Sirwar in Raichur district, were travelling in a Kia Sonet car that was returning from the Venugopalaswami Temple in Surpur. The bus involved in the accident was en route from Bengaluru to Kalaburagi.
According to police, a total of 10 persons — five adults and five children, including an infant — were in the car. One child survived the crash. When the fire was still near the engine portion, some people who rushed to the spot attempted to pull out those stuck in the car.
The deceased have been identified as Krishna Nayak (52), his wife Ananthakala (45), Sharanappa (36), his wife Nisarga (30), their children Siddhartha (3), Advik (5), and Srinidhi (1.5), Shashikala (30), and her son Chandan (8).
Police said another child, Virat (10), son of Shashikala, survived the accident. All 20 passengers travelling in the bus escaped unhurt.
According to preliminary reports, eyewitness accounts suggest that a tyre burst in the car may have caused the driver to lose control, leading to the accident. However, the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
Senior officials, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police, rushed to the spot, and further investigation is in progress.
