New Crest Gates At Tungabhadra Dam By June 2026: DK Shivakumar

Belagavi: The installation of new crest gates at the Tungabhadra reservoir will be taken up once the water level drops to 1,613 feet by the end of December 2025 and is expected to be completed by June 2026, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar told the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Replying to a starred question by MLC Basanagouda Badarli, Shivakumar said the Tungabhadra Board has taken up the replacement of all 33 gates of the Tungabhadra dam, for which the State government has provided an advance grant of Rs 10 crore.

The Tungabhadra dam, located in Karnataka, serves the people of Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Shivakumar said the Tungabhadra Board has awarded the contract for installing a new gate at Gate No 19 at a cost of Rs. 1.66 crore, and for replacing the remaining 32 gates at a cost of Rs 34.48 crore, to M/s Hardware Tools & Machinery Projects Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabad.

At present, fabrication work for Gate No 19 and 14 of the remaining 32 gates has been completed, and dismantling of the existing gates has already commenced, the Deputy Chief Minister said.

Shivakumar added that the design and drawings of the Tungabhadra dam have been examined by the Chief Engineer of the Central Design Organisation, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, and will be certified by the Gates Design (NW & S) Directorate of the Central Water Commission (CWC), New Delhi.

The Tungabhadra Project is an important multipurpose river project in South India. It plays an important role in irrigation of farmland, supports hydroelectric power generation, helps in flood control and supports drinking water supply.
