Mysuru: Pramoda Devi Wadiyar Opposes Kambala Event During Dasara
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said Kambala has its own significance in the Mangaluru region and could have been organised separately.
Bengaluru: A member of erstwhile Mysore royal family Pramoda Devi Wadiyar on Monday took exception to the introduction of Kambala, traditional coastal buffalo race popular in coastal Karnataka, in Mysore Dasara festivities this year and stated “We have to question ourselves was the event needed in Dasara?”
At a press conference in Mysuru, she said “It is my personal opinion. Kambala has its own significance in Mangaluru region” and felt “the event could have been organised at another time giving more attention to it.”
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said “Organising Kambala during Dasara festivities will not get much attention” and stated “I have no idea whether the Kambala event will be held for a day or how many days during Dasara festivities.”
She said the event might have been organised to bring novelty to the Mysore Dasara festivities by the State Government and stated Onam is organised in Keralam and Kambala in Mangaluru and taking tamed elephants in a procession then how appropriate it would be?”
“It is my personal opinion expressed and not intended to hurt the sentiments of Kambala event organisers,” she said.
Meanwhile, works to complete the race tracks are going on at full swing on 17.35 acres near Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Regional Centre in Mysuru on Ring Road. Two parallel tracks are getting ready for the races to prepare slush tracks. The event will be held on October 18 and 19.
