A loud explosion-like sound was reported from the MRPL premises near Jokatte in Mangaluru on Wednesday, followed by the emergence of dense smoke
Mangaluru: A loud blast was reported in MRPL near Mangaluru on Wednesday afternoon, with fire and thick black smoke seen rising from the premises, triggering panic in nearby areas.
The incident is said to have occurred at the third phase of MRPL at Kalavar, about 15 km from Mangaluru, around 12.25 pm. The emergency team of MRPL has rushed to the spot.
Fire and thick black smoke were seen rising from the place following the blast.
The sound of the blast was heard several kilometres away in Angaragundi, Baikampady industrial area and Kulai. Kavoor and parts of Mangaluru City also heard the loud sound, according to local residents.
The impact of the blast was felt in nearby areas, with the Jokatte Gram Panchayat building and several houses reportedly shaking. Residents said doors and windows were damaged in some houses and also the Jokatte Gram Panchayat library.
Fire engines from the New Mangalore Port Authority, Kadri and Pandeshwar were summoned to the site.
The MRPL DPS School has reportedly declared a holiday following the incident.
