Kalaburagi: Amid speculation over a possible leadership change in Karnataka and expectations that the party high command may intervene, AICC president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Sunday said confusion within the state unit was being created by local leaders.
He said issues in the state should be resolved locally instead of being repeatedly attributed to the party high command.
Speaking to reporters in Kalaburagi, he also cautioned against the growing tendency of projecting individuals as solely responsible for the party’s growth, stressing that the Congress was built collectively by its workers and leaders.

“Is the confusion created by the high command? It is the local leaders who are creating confusion. How is it right to keep saying ‘high command.. high command..’ for everything? Issues here should be settled by local leaders,” Kharge said when asked about the perceived confusion within the party in Karnataka.
The Congress government in the state has completed two-and-a-half years, amid persistent speculation over a possible leadership change. While supporters of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have been pressing for his elevation as Chief Minister, supporters of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have maintained that he should complete his full term. Although a breakfast meeting between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar last month was believed to have eased tensions, recent statements by several leaders, including Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra, have once again reignited the debate. Dinner meetings among party leaders during the Belagavi legislature session had also sparked political speculation.
Emphasising the collective nature of the Congress, Kharge said, “The party is built by everyone. No one can say, ‘I built the party.’ The Congress was built by its workers, and they support whoever becomes the leader. No individual should claim that the party was built because of them. Also no party worker should project a leader as solely responsible.”
He added that he had no information about reports suggesting that Shivakumar would be visiting the party high command in New Delhi this week.
