Karnataka: Yatnal Terms Shivanand Patil’s Resignation a Political Farce

Yatnal added that the resignation, which lacked the correct format, was not submitted in accordance with legislative norms

Vijayapura: Bijapur City MLA and BJP leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal on Thursday dismissed Minister for Textile and Agriculture Marketing Shivanand Patil’s resignation as a mere political drama, accusing the Congress leader of indulging in theatrics.

In a post on social media platform X, Yatnal criticised the move as a publicity stunt, stating that Patil was well aware his resignation would not be accepted. Without naming Patil directly, Yatnal wrote, “Some individuals, despite knowing their resignation will not be accepted, choose to submit it anyway, turning the entire episode into a spectacle. Do they not know the proper procedure for legislators to resign?”

Yatnal added that the resignation, which lacked the correct format, was not submitted in accordance with legislative norms. He said Speaker UT Khader should have made it clear that such informal resignations were invalid. “It is laughable that a senior cabinet minister is engaging in this kind of drama,” Yatnal remarked.

Taking aim at the political motives behind the act, Yatnal said the people and voters were closely observing the episode. “If he truly had the courage, he should have resigned properly and prepared for real political action,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Shivanand Patil submitted his resignation as the MLA representing Basavana Bagewadi constituency to Speaker UT Khader at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Patil said he was responding to a challenge thrown by Yatnal, who had demanded that he resign and face him in an election.

“Yatnal set Friday as the deadline for me to resign, and I have done so accordingly,” Patil told reporters. However, the Congress leader clarified that he would not set a similar deadline for Yatnal to step down from his Assembly seat.

The political sparring between the two leaders has intensified in recent days, with the resignation episode adding fuel to the fire.
