Karnataka to Rent Helicopters, Aircraft for VIP Emergency Travel
The decision emerged after a detailed discussion held by a committee led by Shivakumar at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi

Belagavi: For quick and safe movement of the state’s top leadership during emergencies and special situations, the Karnataka government has decided to arrange for high-quality helicopter and special aircraft services on a rental basis, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar clarifying on Tuesday that the state government has no plan to purchase such aircraft.
The decision emerged after a detailed discussion held by a committee led by Shivakumar at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the DCM said a tender has now been floated and several agencies have shown interest.
Shivakumar said members of the Cabinet Sub-Committee including Ministers KJ George, MB Patil, Satish Jarakiholi and Byrathi Suresh along with senior officials held discussion to study the proposals.
When asked about the meeting, he said, “We had requested HAL to provide helicopter services. They informed us that it would still take some time. Helicopters are being manufactured at HAL itself. During the air show, both I and Union Minister Rajnath Singh saw their helicopters. They were impressive, and they also handle their maintenance. Hence, we had approached them for their services. Since it will take time for them to provide the service, they have recommended another company.”
“We want people who have a strong record of providing safe and efficient services to other governments,” he said.
“We decided not to purchase aircraft. Instead, we will hire them on an hourly basis whenever the need arises,” Shivakumar added.
