Karnataka to Add 2,000 New Buses, Boost Fleet in Kalyana Karnataka Region

Minister attributed the surge in bus usage, particularly among women, to the successful implementation of the Shakti scheme

Yadgir: In a move aimed at addressing rising passenger numbers across the state, the Karnataka government has announced plans to procure 2,000 new buses, with a significant portion—600 to 700—set to be deployed in the Kalyana Karnataka region.

State Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy made the announcement on Tuesday while inaugurating a new bus stand at Madhwar village in Yadgir district. He attributed the surge in bus usage, particularly among women, to the successful implementation of the Shakti scheme, which offers free travel for women in state-run buses.

“With the Shakti scheme driving up demand, we are augmenting our fleet by adding 2,000 new buses. Out of these, 600 to 700 will be dedicated to improving services in Kalyana Karnataka,” Reddy said.

Addressing the issue of manpower shortages in the state’s transport sector, the minister said the government would soon launch a major recruitment drive. “We plan to fill 10,000 positions, including 1,000 on compassionate grounds and 9,000 posts for drivers and conductors. The process will begin once we secure approval from the finance department,” he added.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance public transport infrastructure and accessibility across Karnataka.
