Karnataka: Residential School Shifted Against Wishes Of Students/Parents Temporarily In Hassan

BENGALURU: The functioning of Dr B.R. Ambedkar Morarji Residential School run by Department of Social Welfare at Shantigrama in Hassan taluk was smooth until a couple of days back when a section of media reports highlighted the Residential School run in a shed compelled its shifting to Halli Mysore, a village in Holenarsipura taluk of Hassan, against the wishes of students and their parents. A new building is getting ready at Shantigrama which is expected to be inaugurated in about 6-months.
Eventually, parents of students studying in Dr B.R. Ambedkar Morarji Desai Residential School gave their consent after a day-long convincing on Sunday from officials of Social Welfare Department and the local police officials to shift their children from their present location at Shantigarama in Hassan taluk to Halli Mysore, a village, in Holenarsipura taluk of Hassan.
Once the consent from parents was received, officials shifted the students in 3 buses to a new location in Halli Mysore. At the shed turned Residential School, 92 boys and 80 girls’ study. Officials of Department of Social Welfare, Hassan paid rent of Rs 1.08 lakh a month for a shed turned into Dr B.R. Ambedkar Residential School at Shantigrama, about 15-km from Hassan town. The rent has been paid for the shed for about 5 years to conduct classes for students from 6th standard to 10th standard.
The shifting of students from Shantigrama was opposed by parents finding the Residential School run in a shed at Shantigrama was convenient for their children to study and stated they never ever complained over facilities at the shed nor their children. Parents wanted officials concerned “not to go by the media reports and shift the Residential School.”
Explaining the reasons for shifting the Residential School, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department, Hassan Doodpeer told Deccan Chronicle on Sunday “When the School was sanctioned to Shantigrama a couple of years back, there was no building to accommodate 250 students. Search for a suitable location went futile and started the Residential School in a shed type structure.”
The Deputy Director said “Parents of students came to know about the shifting plans and opposed the move citing that the shed had all the required facilities for their children to study demanding not to shift from Shantigrama.” Under pressure from officials, Social Welfare Department officials dropped the plan to shift the Residential School from Shantigrama.
But, with a section of the media projecting the Residential School run in a shed a couple of days back, officials were quick to shift the School to Halli Mysore after finding the structure could accommodate about students. Meanwhile, the Deputy Director said a new building is under construction at Shantigrama and the building will be ready to accommodate students once works are completed in about 6 months.
