Pregnant Woman Killed in Alleged Attack by Relatives; Honour Killing Angle Probed
While resentment over her marriage is suspected to be the motive and the incident is being viewed as a possible case of honour killing, police said the matter is being probed from all angles

The incident is viewed as an honor killing as there was resentment over her inter-caste marriage. The case is being investigated from all angles.
The victim, identified as Manya Patil (20), was allegedly attacked by a group led by her father Prakash. The FIR has named 14 persons in connection with the incident. The assault also left her mother-in-law Renuka, father-in-law Mariyappa and sister-in-law Hoovamma injured. They were treated at a hospital.
Police said the assailants attacked the family using iron pipes and agricultural implements, resulting in Manya’s death.
Manya had married Vivekananda in May this year. Police said the marriage was opposed by her family as the groom belongs to a different caste. Despite opposition, Manya went ahead with the marriage.
Officials confirmed that following the marriage, the couple had approached the police apprehending threat to their lives. In June, Manya’s father and close relatives were summoned and made to execute a one-year bond over, assuring they would not harm the couple.
However, the accused allegedly violated the undertaking and carried out the fatal attack.
A case has been registered at the Dharwad Rural Police Station, and further investigation is underway. While preliminary findings point to resentment over the inter-caste marriage as the motive, police said all angles are being examined.
Police confirmed that three persons were arrested late on Sunday night, identified as Manya’s father Prakash and relatives Veeranna and Arun.
The last rites were performed by Vivekananda. Sources said the accused had initially attempted to attack Vivekananda and other family members near a field, but they managed to escape.
