Karnataka: Online Gambling Addicted Youth Accused Of Murdering An Elderly Woman In Bengaluru

BENGALURU: 21-year-old Gagan addicted to online gambling is accused of alleged murder of his neighbour Jayamma (61) by strangulating her to death with an intention to rob her gold accessories she was wearing and later dumped the body of the woman in a nearby lake only to be recovered by the police, a couple of days after the incident. However, investigations by Kumbalgodu police led to the arrest of Gagan.

Police said Jayamma went missing on July 15 from her residence at Yellappa Layout under Kumbalgodu police station limits while police were alerted over a swollen body floating in Ramohalli Thimmappa Lake and the police patrolling team on visiting the location discovered a body stuffed inside a suitcase and the floating body of the woman was lying on the edges of the Lake. Prior to her body recovery, family members conducted a search for missing Jayamma and the efforts to trace her went futile.

Taking up investigation into the death of the senior citizen, Kumbalgodu police came across a suspect Gagan and he told the police Jayamma came to his house when he was alone at the house. Jayamma wanted to make a phone call to one of her relatives through Gagan when she was allegedly murdered. However, lured by jewellery she was wearing, Gagan is said to have made use of the opportunity and strangulated the woman to death before robbing her gold accessories such as a gold chain, a finger ring and earrings.

He is said to have robbed the jewellery since was under financial pressure owing to addiction to online gambling in which he underwent losses. To cover up the losses he suffered from online gambling, Gagan allegedly murdered the woman through strangulation and later dumped the body stuffed in a suitcase in Thimmappa Lake before it was retrieved by the police. Kumbalgodu police have registered a case and investigation is on.
