Karnataka Minister Resigns as MLA, Challenges Rival to Follow Suit
Shivanand Patil tendered his resignation to Speaker U.T. Khader at his office in Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru.

Patil asked Yatnal to decide the Assembly seat to fight the election.
Bengaluru: Accepting a challenge thrown at him by expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal to vacate his Assembly seat by Friday, minister of textiles and agricultural marketing Shivanand Patil on Friday tendered his resignation as an MLA representing Basavana Bagewadi Assembly seat in Vijayapura district.
Shivanand Patil tendered his resignation to Speaker U.T. Khader at his office in Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru.
“Yatnal set Friday as the deadline for me to resign and accordingly I have resigned,” said Shivanand Patil and now it is upto Basanagouda Patil Yatnal to resign his Assembly seat. However, the minister said he will not set a deadline for Yatnal to resign as an MLA.
The resignation from Shivanand Patil is over a condition that his resignation should be accepted by the Speaker an hour before Yatnal, representing Vijayapura Assembly seat, resigns from his seat.
Patil said “It is my personal decision to resign as an MLA. I have not spoken to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or the Congress party about his decision.”
“To resign and contest against Yatnal is to give answer to him over his personal remarks against his surname,” said Patil.
Patil asked Yatnal to decide the Assembly seat to fight the election and stated “I’m ready to contest against Yatnal whether from Basavana Bagewadi Assembly seat or from Vijayapura seat.”
It may be recalled here that a couple of days back Yatnal threw a challenge at Shivanand Patil to resign as an MLA over ‘personal’ reasons and Patil said Yatnal raked up his ‘surname’ and it ‘hurt’ him. The minister accused Yatnal of trying to ‘tarnish’ his image.
Speaker U.T. Khader told reporters he received the resignation letter of Shivanand Patil and will ‘scrutiny’ his resignation.
