Karnataka: Food Licence To Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, Bigbasket To Be Suspended For Selling ‘Toxic’ Datura Fruits/Seeds Online

BENGALURU: The concerned competent authorities have been directed by Commissioner of Food Safety and Drugs Administration to necessary legal action for the suspension of food licences issued to the e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, Bigbasket and their associated sellers over display and online sales of Datura fruits/seeds possessing toxic properties.
The Commissioner of Food Safety and Drugs Administration in a press note stated that Datura fruits/seeds are being displayed for sale on certain online sales platforms and are sold under FSSAI licences/registrations and consumption of Datura seeds/fruits may cause serious adverse effects on human health and an order has been issued on August 24 to initiate necessary action for the suspension of the licences/registrations of the concerned online sales platforms, e-commerce entities such as Amazon, Bigbasket, Swiggy Instamart and their associated sellers.
Concerned officials have been directed by the Commissioner of Food Safety and Drugs Administration to submit a compliance report and he assured after receiving the compliance report, the matter regarding revocation of the suspension shall be considered separately, after providing the concerned parties with an opportunity of hearing and appropriate orders shall be issued.
The concerned Food Business Operators have been directed to immediately remove or discontinue all online listings, advertisements and promotional activities relating to the sale, distribution or display for the sale Datura fruits/seeds intended for food or human consumption.
