Karnataka Council Chairman Resigns Abruptly; BJP Alleges “He Quit Under Pressure From Congress“

Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti resigned, a day after refusing to step down. While he called it a voluntary decision, the BJP alleged he was forced to resign under pressure from the ruling Congress.

A day before he had refused to quit as Council Chairman and things changed on Friday wherein Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti tendered resignation to the post citing his resignation was a voluntary decision. The resignation was accepted.

But, the principal opposition party-the Bharatiya Janata Party is in no mood to accept that Horatti resigned “voluntarily’ and the party alleged “He resigned under pressure from the ruling Congress party.’

Reacting to the resignation of Basavaraj Horatti, belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party, Leader of Opposition in Assembly R. Ashok alleged “While Horatti was at his office, Congress MLAs barged to his office carrying letterheads, typed them and mounted pressure on the Council Chairman to insert his signature.”

Terming the forced resignation of Horatti, elected to the Council for a record 8 times on a trot, an insult to the entire House, Ashok stated “No one in the history of the Council has been insulted like this.” Horatti, being the senior-most member in both the Houses, had decided to resign on August 14 but Congress members forcibly took his resignation, Ashok alleged and stated “This is black mark on the State Government.”

Ashok charged at the ruling Congress Government stating “This incident proved that this government indulges in goondaism.”

However, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated the resignation of Basavaraj Horatti was over recent political developments and he thanked Horatti for his resignation from the post of Council chairman. Shivakumar stated the new Council Chairman will be elected on August 14 after the election of Deputy Chairman of the Council.

Responding to a reported no-confidence motion planned by Congress party against Basavaraj Horatti, Shivakumar stated “Now the question does not arise since he has stepped down from the post.”
