Karnataka CM Takes A Veiled Attack On Governor In His Speech

Asking citizens of the country to take a pledge to safeguard the Constitution, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said “If we protect the Constitution, the Constitution will protect us and the nation will remain secure.”

BENGALURU: In an oblique reference to Governor refraining from addressing State Government/cabinet prepared speech at the start of joint session of legislature and instead delivered his own speech, a couple of days, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday stated “Since, openly discarding the Constitution is difficult, there are attempts to weaken it gradually by undermining Constitutional institutions (such as Lok Bhavan).”

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot objected to State Government criticism of Union Government repealing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and bringing in Viksit Bharat –Guarantee Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission Act, 2025 in its speech to address the joint session of legislature. Citing objections to the speech prepared by the State Government, Governor refrained from making a complete speech and instead cut short the speech to about 38-seconds.

In an indirect reference to the Governor, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, delivered a speech after unfurling the tri-colour on the occasion of 77th Republic Day in Bengaluru, “The slow erosion of Constitutional values is dangerous” and wanted “people to be vigilant against such attempts.”

Asking citizens of the country to take a pledge to safeguard the Constitution, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said “If we protect the Constitution, the Constitution will protect us and the nation will remain secure.”

Recalling he said, “Even when Dr Ambedkar presented the Constitution to the nation, there were those who opposed it. Even today, voices calling for the Constitution to be changed or weakened are occasionally heard.”

In his speech, the Chief Minister stated “Those who oppose the Constitution are, in effect, opposing social change and social justice. The people must recognize that such forces oppose laws and programmes meant for the poor, farmers, workers, dalits and the opposed sections of the society.”

“I have made a sincere effort to realize the ideals of the Constitution. I view the development as a powerful instrument to create opportunities for those who have endured generations of inequality and discrimination," said the Chief Minister.
