Belagavi: In a significant boost to coastal tourism, the state government has cleared a Rs 5-crore project for upgrading Udupi’s Lighthouse Beach while earmarking fresh grants for Kambala events and key infrastructure works across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Responding to a starred question raised by Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai during the Question Hour at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism Minister HK Patil informed the Assembly that the state government will release a grant of Rs 5 lakh each for 23 Kambala events in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts that have received approval from the District Kambala Committee.
The minister said proposals for grants for Kambala events scheduled in 2025-26 have been accepted and sent to the Finance Department for approval.
He added that the Deputy Commissioners had already released a total of Rs 50 lakh—Rs 5 lakh each—for ten Kambala events held in 2024-25 at Mulki, Mangaluru, Naringana, Moodbidri, Aikala, Jeppu, Puttur, Bantwal, Uppinangady and Venur in Dakshina Kannada district.
Assuring the House, Patil said grants for all 23 approved Kambala events would be released as per the demand of MLAs from the region. Legislators from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada welcomed the decision unanimously.
Replying to a question from Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty, Patil said the government has approved Rs 5 crore for the development of the Lighthouse Beach in Udupi district. The project will be implemented by the Karnataka Tourism Infrastructure Corporation.
The minister said the government is giving special focus to promoting tourism in the coastal belt. He said work on the access bridge and connecting road at the Padubidri Nadigantha Beach endpoint in Kaup constituency has been completed at a cost of Rs 75 lakh.
For the fiscal year 2025-26, the government has allocated Rs 86 crore for improving basic infrastructure at tourist destinations, and new works worth Rs 14 crore will be taken up based on priority.
Under the Karnataka Tourism Policy 2024–29, several locations—Kaup Beach, Lighthouse, Padubidri Blue Flag Beach, Kaup Marigudi Temple, Uchila Mahalakshmi Temple, Udupi Kunjarugiri Durga Temple and Mattu Rock Island—have been identified for development, he said.
