Karnataka: BR Patil Resigns as CM Siddaramaiah’s Political Advisor

Sources suggest that Patil’s resignation may stem from his limited role in governance

Kalaburagi: In a significant political move, senior Congress leader BR Patil has resigned from his position as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s political advisor, fueling speculation within the party.

Confirming his resignation, Patil told Deccan Chronicle that he had submitted his resignation two days ago and returned his official car and office. However, he refrained from revealing the reason behind his decision, stating, "The Chief Minister knows the reason."

Sources suggest that Patil’s resignation may stem from his limited role in governance. Despite holding the title of advisor, insiders claim that CM Siddaramaiah rarely sought external counsel. Additionally, Patil is reportedly dissatisfied with the lack of developmental projects in his constituency, which may have contributed to his frustration.

His exit has once again brought Congress’ internal power dynamics into focus. When the party assumed power in 2023, Patil was initially speculated to receive a ministerial position. However, with Priyank Kharge and Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil securing cabinet berths, Patil was left out and was later appointed as the CM’s political advisor in December 2023.

Patil’s resignation raises concerns about the Congress leadership’s ability to accommodate senior leaders who feel sidelined. His move could trigger further dissent within the party ranks.

A seasoned politician, Patil has been elected as an MLA from Aland in Kalaburagi district multiple times, winning under different party banners. He won on a Janata Party ticket in 1983, as a JD(S) candidate in 2004, from Karnataka Janata Party in 2013, and on a Congress ticket in 2023. He also served as an MLC from 1988-94 and was the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council from 1991-94.
