Mangaluru: In a significant push to promote Kambala—the traditional buffalo race of coastal Karnataka—Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday announced that Kambala will be included in the state’s Dasara sports events starting this year.

Speaking at the Mooluru-Aduru Kambala on Saturday, Shivakumar said the government was committed to giving Kambala international exposure. “Kambala has already been held in Bengaluru. We will provide permanent encouragement to this folk sport,” he said.

Shivakumar lauded the cultural and educational richness of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, which he said is home to several religious pilgrimage sites and the highest number of medical and engineering colleges in the state.

“To complement this, we will soon bring a new policy to promote tourism in the coastal region,” he said, adding that he would visit the region again along with the Tourism Minister to chalk out development plans.

The event was attended by MLCs Ivan D’Souza, Manjunath Bhandary and others.
