Kalaburagi: Police shot and apprehended one of the three convicts who escaped from the Kalaburagi Central Prison after he allegedly attacked a police team attempting to arrest him on Wednesday morning. Two police personnel were also injured during the operation.
Addressing reporters, Kalaburagi City Police Commissioner Sharanappa SD said the injured convict has been identified as Santosh (28), a native of Bidar district, who was serving a life sentence after being convicted in a rape and POCSO.
The prison authorities had filed a complaint with the police following the escape of the three convicts, after which the city police formed special teams and an inter district coordination team with the Range DIG and the Superintendents of Police of Bidar, Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts to trace the escapees.
According to the Commissioner, the three avoided the main roads and moved through agricultural fields after fleeing the prison. “The three split up soon after the escape, with two travelling together initially before eventually moving separately,” he said.
A police team led by Fartabad Inspector received information that one of the escapees was spotted near the Industrial area on the way to Humnabad.
"When the team reached there and tried to apprehend him, he allegedly attacked the police. After firing a warning shot into the air failed to deter him, the police opened fire, injuring him in the leg," he said.
Two police personnel, identified as Kalyani and Prakash, sustained injuries during the operation and were admitted to hospital.
The Commissioner said efforts were continuing to trace the remaining two escaped convicts, both natives of Bidar district.
