Healthy Snacks To Be Served At State Meets In Karnataka

BENGALURU: Taking note the food, refreshments and beverages served in government offices and related meetings are not necessarily healthy and does not promote healthy diet and nutrition, the Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services, Bengaluru issued a nutrition advisory for government meetings, functions, gathering among others.
The Commissionerate in its nutrition advisory stated “There is availability of abundant ancient Indian knowledge on nutrition and diet and its link to good health, one has paid less attention in adopting this at workplaces.”
As per the nutrition advisory, millet-based snacks, low fat oil, low sugar, high fibre, fresh cut fruits and vegetables salad/sprouts, nuts such as almond, groundnut, walnut to be served, green tea/low fat buttermilk, locally filtered water/ boiled water to be served during office in-house meetings and breaks.
The nutrition advisory for government meetings/functions/ gatherings and others include millet-based item, inclusion of local cuisine and atleast one local recipe use of Brown rice instead of white rice and in case of non-veg being served, restrict to well-cooked lean/white meat.
Besides, all eateries within government office campus, the nutrition advisory stated millet based food/snacks, boiled horse-gram. chickpeas/ corn to be included, filtered/ boiled water, low fat and low sugar beverages among others.
In a stern warning, the advisory on nutrition stated no use of microwave heated/cooked food, industrially processed food, high fat/oil/spiced food, carbonated water drinks, milk coffee/tea, plastic bottled water, high sugar fruit juices and alcohol based beverages.
The advisory wanted local cottage industries, Self-Help Groups, kitchen of prisons, nutri gardens and others to be preferred for placing food/beverages orders.
