Haveri: A 35-year-old man from Haveri district lost nearly `6 lakh after falling prey to an online scam promising double returns through an alleged investment scheme linked to "Trump Hotel Rental."
According to a press statement from Haveri district police, Anil Bendre came across a video while watching YouTube between January and April. The video, titled “Trump Hotel Rental – Double Your Money,” contained a link redirecting him to a website where he was asked to register and invest money to receive daily profits.
Trusting the platform, Anil initially transferred `1,500 via UPI to activate his account. As the website displayed increasing virtual profits, he continued investing larger amounts through various bank accounts and wallets provided by the fraudsters. Over time, he transferred `5,93,240 from his wife’s account.
Bendre neither received the promised profits nor a refund of the invested amount. Realising he had been duped, he approached the Haveri Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics (CEN) police. A case has been registered under IPC and IT Act sections, and during the investigation, Rs 1.5 lakh in one of the suspect accounts was frozen.
