Hailstones Accompanied by Heavy Rains in Bengaluru

South and southeast Bengaluru worst affected; trees fall, roads flood, and traffic slows down.

Bengaluru: Heavy rain accompanied by hailstones lashed Bengaluru city on Tuesday, resulting in waterlogging and traffic congestion. Reports indicated that south and south-east parts of the city received heavy rain.

Banaswadi witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by a hailstorm, with one resident calling it “one of the heaviest hailstorms in recent years.” According to sources, RT Nagar recorded the highest rainfall at 68 mm, followed by Kamanahalli (45 mm), Marathahalli (35 mm), New BEL Road (23 mm), Mahadevapura (22 mm), and Brookfields (23 mm).

As heavy rain affected vehicular movement, traffic police of Whitefield, Mahadevapura among others were quick to issue advisory to motorists. Whitefield traffic police alerted motorists on the slow movement of traffic near Balagere T Junction road towards Vibgyor School due to waterlogging.

Trees were uprooted in RT Nagar after heavy rain lashed the region. Fallen trees were later cleared from the road by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike personnel. RT Nagar police closed an open drain chamber at CQA Cross which was posing threat to public.

A tree was uprooted in PG Halli and the fallen tree was cleared to make way for smooth traffic flow in the region. Waterlogging of roads were reported in Kumaraswamy Layout and motorists had to negotiate slow-moving vehicles.

Traffic was affected for some time at Ramamurthy Nagar towards Dodda Banaswadi after a tree fell on the road, disrupting the movement on the road. The road was temporarily closed and vehicles were diverted.

Mahadevapura traffic police alerted motorists of slow movement of vehicles on the ring road from Kasturi Nagar owing to waterlogging. Inundation of Ring Road resulted in heavy traffic density, causing inconvenience to motorists.

A motorist travelling on Shanti Nagar Double Road expressed displeasure over concerned authorities not taking measures to ease vehicular movement on the road for nearly 20 years while a pedestrian complained blocked storm water drains result in flooding of roads whenever it rains.
