A Tail of Dispute: When Kitten Care Became a Police Matter

Playing the “Panchayat” mediators, the Bengaluru Police heard both sides and decided to hand over the kittens to a third party.

Bengaluru: We have heard of police playing mediators by acting as neutral third parties in community, domestic, or minor criminal disputes. But things went beyond human issues when Seshadripuram police had to step in and sort out the issue of disputed parentage and the custody of - four kittens!

To cut a long story short, a neighbour’s male cat ‘allegedly’ impregnated the female cat and eventually she gave birth to four kittens. Now the female cat owner, burdened with the responsibility of caring for four furry baggages, brought them to the owner of the male cat and demanded that they take responsibility, as their cat was the father.
This turned into a massive disagreement, followed by a heated argument, including the paternity issue about whether their cat was actually the father, followed by a few choice abuses between the pet parents. In the fight that ensued, the female cat owner is said to have thrown one of the kittens down, all in the presence of the pet parents, the kittens, and their parents.
Local animal activists who were watching the clash immediately called the City Police, who rushed to the spot.
Playing the “Panchayat” mediators, they heard both sides and decided to end the issue. The team decided to hand over the kittens to a third party, which would ensure that neither of the pet parents would be burdened with taking care of the animals. Neighbours said the timely police mediation kept the situation from escalating, leading to peace in the neighborhood and the kittens finding a happy home.
