The shipyard also marked two other stages of the project on Monday, with the keel laying of the third vessel and steel cutting for the fourth vessel in the series.
Udupi: The first of eight 6,300 deadweight tonnage (DWT) dry cargo vessels being built by Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL) for Norway-based Wilson ASA was launched at the shipyard in Malpe on Monday. It is the largest vessel built at the yard since UCSL was incorporated in 2021.
The shipyard also marked two other stages of the project on Monday, with the keel laying of the third vessel and steel cutting for the fourth vessel in the series.
The launched vessel is 99 metres long and 15.85 metres wide, with a cargo hold capacity of 3,16,278 cubic feet. Designed by Netherlands-based Conoship International BV, this vessel is an innovative, future-proof, and eco-friendly general cargo vessel, which gives more thrust on fuel efficiency thereby reducing the Operational expenses and environmental impact.
Wilson ASA Chairman Eivind Eidesvik and his daughter Anna Eidesvik jointly launched the vessel, while Norwegian Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener laid the keel for the third ship.
Union Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar, who attended the programme through video conferencing from New Delhi, appreciated the shipyard for achieving the milestones.
The contract for the eight 6,300 DWT vessels was signed in June 2024, and the first vessel is scheduled for delivery in December 2026.
UCSL had earlier completed and delivered six 3,800 DWT Dry Cargo Vessels to Wilson ASA, each measuring approximately 89 metres in length. The first of the 3,800 DWT dry Cargo Vessel was delivered in Apr 2025 and the remaining 5 sister ships were delivered in a span of 14 months, marking a remarkable achievement for a shipyard that restarted its operations four years back.
Officials from the Karnataka government, Cochin Shipyard Limited and UCSL attended the programme.
