Seven Injured As Fireworks Aparks Fall On Spectators At Puttur Temple Fest

MANGALURU:Seven youths were injured after sparks from a fireworks display fell on spectators during the annual festival of Puttur temple in the early hours of April 18.

According to the complaint, Sumant Shetty (20), a resident of Kundapur in Udupi district, and a student in Mangaluru, had attended the jatra (annual festival) along with his friends. The incident occurred when they were standing at a distance in the fairgrounds watching the fireworks show organised as part of the festivities.

During the display, burning particles from the fireworks allegedly fell on the group, injuring Sumant Shetty and his friends — Bharat, Kaushik, Soumya, Deepak, Yashwant and Mohan. The injured complainant was rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru, where they are undergoing treatment.

Based on a complaint filed by Shetty, the police have booked the organisers of the fireworks show, members of the temple management committee and others for alleged negligence. The complaint states that adequate safety precautions were not put in place during the display.

A case has been registered at Puttur Town Police Station under Sections 288, 125(a) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
