Fire Guts Three Shops Near Kundapur Temple; No Casualties Reported

Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that an electronics shop, a provisions store, a hardware shop and a bookshop — which was also being used as a godown for crackers — were affected in the incident.

Udupi: A fire broke out in a building complex near Venkataramana Temple in Kundapur, gutting three shops completely and partially damaging two others.

According to the police, the fire originated due to a short circuit at a puja items shop and quickly spread to adjoining establishments. Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that an electronics shop, a provisions store, a hardware shop and a bookshop — which was also being used as a godown for crackers — were affected in the incident.
Fire tenders from Kundapura and Byndoor were brought to extinguish the fire under control after sustained efforts. No casualties were reported. The extent of property damage is yet to be assessed.
The SP said the licence of the crackers shop had been cancelled on December 16. “A case will be registered against the owner for illegal storage of crackers,” he added.
