Manipal: The family of a 76-year-old woman from Gangolli in Udupi district donated her organs including liver, corneas and skin after she was declared brain-dead at Kasturba Hospital in Manipal.
According to the statement from the hospital, Jenny D'Souza, a homemaker, was brought to the hospital after a sudden spell of giddiness that turned within hours into a loss of consciousness, caused by a massive bleed in the brain. Despite efforts, she was declared brain dead in accordance with the prescribed medical protocol, the hospital said.
According to the hospital, following her declaration of brain death, her family asked whether she could still be an organ donor. The authorities informed her family that age was not a barrier to donation, subject to medical evaluation, and thus at 76 she became a donor of liver, corneas and skin.
The donation was carried out in coordination with Jeevasarthakathe, Karnataka's State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization.
“We often think of organ donation as something meant for the young. This family, whose loved one was seventy-six, has taught us otherwise. In the darkest hour of their lives, they chose to give life to others. Age is not a barrier to compassion or to donation. Let her memory be the reason a hundred more families say yes,” MAHE Teaching Hospitals Chief Operating Officer Dr. Sudhakar Kantipudi said.
