Suhas Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and Hindutva activist was murdered by an unidentified group late on Thursday evening within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru City.

Shetty gained national attention in 2022 when he was arrested as one of the main accused in the murder of Mohammed Fazil, a 23-year-old Muslim youth from Mangalapete in Surathkal, Karnataka. Fazil's killing occurred shortly after the assassination of BJP youth leader Praveen Nettaru, leading to heightened communal tensions in the region.

The assailants, armed with swords and sharp weapons, blocked their vehicle and launched the attack. Shetty succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to AJ Hospital.

In response to the murder, Mangaluru authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS), effective until May 6, to prevent further unrest. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other right-wing groups organized a bandh across Dakshina Kannada, leading to widespread shutdowns and incidents of violence, including stone-pelting on buses.
