Engineering College Hostel Warden Arrested for Insult to Kannada

Viral video sparks protest; FIR filed for insulting Kannada language.

Bengaluru: Warden of AMC Engineering College, Bengaluru, Suresh P.V. was on Monday dismissed from duty by the College Principal over the former’s display of anti-Kannada stance in a conversation with a group of students of the College hostel. The incident reportedly took place on January 1 and the dismissed warden has been arrested by the police.

In a viral video, Suresh, conversing in Hindi, told the students, “If you wish to speak in Kannada, then use it at home. It is an institution.” Switching to Kannada from Hindi, Suresh told the students, “It is not compulsory to use Kannada here.”

“You have to decide whether to use Kannada or not,” Suresh told the students in a video. The video caught the attention of Kannada Rakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannada organization and the members staged a protest in front of the institution located in Kalkere on Bannerghatta road.

In the dismissal letter the College Principal asked Suresh that he has been dismissed with immediate effect and directed him to hand over the charge, records and hostel-related responsibilities. A First Information Report was filed against Suresh and he has been booked for insulting a language under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
