Mangaluru: Home Minister G Parameshwara on Saturday confirmed the arrest of eight individuals in connection with the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty, who was brutally attacked on May 1 near Kinnipadavu Junction in Bajpe village. The murder was the result of an old rivalry. The arrested include two Hindus, according to the police.
Parameshwara held a review meeting with the officials in Mangaluru on Saturday.
Shetty, a resident of Karinja in Bantwal taluk, was traveling with friends in an Innova car when the accused, in a white Swift and a Bolero pick-up, rammed into his vehicle and assaulted him with lethal weapons. He succumbed to injuries later at A.J. Hospital. A case had been registered at the Bajpe Police Station, and special teams were formed to trace the culprits.
Giving details about the arrest, City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal said that those arrested include Abdul Safwan (29), Niyaz (25), Mohammed Musammir (32), Kalandar Shafi (29), Adil Mehroof (27), Nagaraj M (20), Mohammed Rizwan (28), and Ranjith (19). Vehicles and weapons used in the crime have been seized, and a search is on for others involved.
Agarwal said the motive behind the murder stemmed from a previous assault case. In 2023, Abdul Safwan was allegedly attacked by Suhas Shetty’s associates in a grievous assault case registered at Surathkal Police Station. Seeking revenge and citing continued threats, Safwan, along with the others, conspired to eliminate Shetty. Notably, financial support for the operation came from Adil Mehroof, whose brother Fazil was previously murdered in Surathkal (Shetty was the main accused in this case).
Responding to questions on whether Shetty was aware of any threats, the Commissioner said that during regular reviews, the police issue warnings to individuals involved in crime and also about potential threats.
The Swift car, Bolero pick-up and weapons used in the attack have been seized. The search is ongoing to identify and apprehend others who assisted the accused in the crime.
