DyCM Loses His Cool To 'Caution' A Citizen Over Passage Of A Bill, Draws Flak

“I did not fear Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Union home minister (Amit Shah) and went to jail. Will I fear a Hebbar?”: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar

BENGALURU: A letter from activist Kiran Hebbar demanding immediate steps to pass the Karnataka Apartment (Ownership and Management) Bill annoyed Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar who retaliated by asking him “not to warn or caution the state government.”

Shivakumar, the Bengaluru in charge minister, speaking at an event, stated: “I did not fear Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Union home minister (Amit Shah) and went to jail. Will I fear a Hebbar?” At the function to discuss the proposed legislation with Bangalore Apartments Federation and resident associations, he said: “You (Hebbar) can’t warn this government,” he said and stated “who are you cautioning?”

Shivakumar read out the letter written by Hebbar wherein he had stated: “We caution the ruling party to consider our request (amendment to Karnataka Apartment (Ownership and Management) Bill) …” Hebbar said the residents in apartments numbered approximately 1.3 crore against the total Bengaluru population of 1.5 crore.

Shivakumar stated, “I think, some do not know my background” and added that he was disappointed by Hebbar’s letter.

Hebbar told reporters “I have taken the cautioning by Shivakumar in a positive manner” and clarified his intention to write the Deputy Chief minister was to state that passing the Bill would “mutually benefit the state government and the residents.”

Taking exception to Shivakumar’s remarks, industrialist T.V. Mohandas Pai stated: “You are our representative and not our master” and added “Very wrong to talk to citizens like this and create fear (in them).”
